Minor Modifications

I mentioned in my pages on using the head that lubrication ducts to the idler pulleys would be a good idea and that fitting the safety shrouds using wing nuts would aid their rapid removal, both I feel worth doing.

Three other simple but far from essential modifications are worth considering should you still have to make the head.

1. Access to the spanner flats on the adapter (L1) is only available from the rear of the head due to access from the front being denied by the lower edge of the spindle mount (C18). However, this can easily be cut away, say over a length of about 80 mm and 10 mm high to allow access from the front also. This would in no way reduce the strength of the mount.

2. The operating handle arm (C8) being wide, tends to throw a shadow onto the leadscrew dial making it a little difficult to read in some lighting conditions. It would be a good idea therefor to reduce the width either side of the dial to improve the situation. An operating handle (C6, etc.) would probably be worth fitting at either end also.

3. Adding spanner flats to the collet chuck body (S8) would make for easier removal.

If Ever!

If ever I find myself in a position where only a very small workshop would be possible I am now convinced that my Myford, the milling head, and a small drilling machine would be enough to fulfil my desire for metal working. Who knows, I may even down size before that situation arises.
